Yet Another Chardonnay from Meyer Family Vineyards: Chardonnay Okanagan Valley 2018 Naramata Bench, Stevens Block-Old Main Road Vineyard

Is the last bottle sampled the best?

I have already written that 2018 was not a great year in the Okanagan however what we have seen is that the Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay really crossed the finish line in very good condition.

How did this Chardonnay fare?

Pale gold in colour.

On the palate lime, lemon, muskmelon, butterscotch and honey. It’s a bit raspy in the back palate perhaps we can call this its seductive minerality? As for oak thank goodness it was kept in seasoned French oak for 6 months making it a discretely oaked Chardonnay. It is at a level where the oak is just perfect. The finish initially is short but pulsates back to the point this is a wine with a surprisingly long finish. It does not have any brilliant complexity to it but given the poor growing conditions and knowing the powerhouse Chardonnay’s Meyer has produced in the past this is a great example of winemaking.

I think this has a definite Euro streak in it because it is built for food. I am thinking breast of organic chicken sliced and sautéed with onions and sweet local garlic with orzo thrown in with a couple of field tomatoes finely chopped with fresh garden basil and a cup of this wine with a couple cups of chicken stock adding some 35% cream when the orzo is just about cooked.

This wine has an edge of brilliance to it taken as far as a talented winemaker can take it. Had it been a better year brilliance would have been its moniker. But until the next good year enjoy this slightly austere wine. You can’t always have your cake and eat it too!

350 cases produced.

I’d give this until 2021 to see if it can improve but in reality this is a drink before the end of the year.
