Uncorked: Talking Turkey with A Couple Of Ontario Wines From Vineland Estates

I think you’ll do well with a turkey and all the fixings with a Vineland Gewürztraminer 2015 from the Niagara Peninsula.

Its colour is golden.

On the nose peach, honey, apricot and marmalade. This is a friendly wine suitable for young and old.

On the palate a bit of rough gravelly mouthfeel. Vey mellow apricot and peach with some lesser notes of Bartlett pears and honey. The finish is short but it has enough guts to handle even dark meat! It can also wrestle down those Brussel sprouts and traditional bread stuffing of breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, onions and savoury. Now many of us there do not have cranberry sauce with our turkey but if you do a red Gamay might be more appropriate.

This is distinctly a Vineland Gewurtz which meaning it is far less striking than an Alsatian Gewürztraminer hence better suited towards turkey. It also suits soft Ontario cheeses like those from Five Brothers in Ontario or the various soft (and expensive) cheeses from Niagara.

On its own a bit of faint bitterness on the palate which makes it’s a better foodie than sipping wine and a great match for the powerful Brussel sprout!

You may know I am no fan of most Ontario Rieslings as they remind me of grapefruit juice. However, The Elevation Riesling from Vineyard Estates. And at 10% you aren’t drinking rocket fuel!

Pale gold coloured.

A rather straightforward apple, pear, lime and lemon on the palate. There is also a tad of honey and cantaloupe.

On the palate I suppose we’d call this a semi dry white. The acids are lurking but beaten back by the sugars making this a crisp but not tart wine. Pear, apple and a tiny bit of pineapple. It will pair nicely with both dark and white turkey meat and handle the fixings. Personally, I’d prefer the Gewürztraminer. However this Elevation certainly elevates my impression of what Ontario Rieslings can be.

By the way if you visit the winery what a lovely patio overlooking Lake Ontario and by the way quite possibly the best fries I have ever had.
