Talking Turkey: Vina Esmeralda from Spain
Choosing the right wine to accompany turkey is not an easy proposition. I prefer lighter and fruitier wine as opposed to heavy hitters. The heavy hitters like Cabernet Sauvignon can more or less destroy the bird. For reds I like a Gamay.
I have always enjoyed the Spanish Vina Esmeralda from Torres wines.
It is very un-Spanish with a Gewürztraminer and Muscat blend.
In colour mid-gold.
On the nose pear, peach, custard, marmalade and honey.
On the palate there is some very gentle acidity. Its light and fruity with apricot, Golden Delicious apple and honey. Not complicated so its not going to fowl up your bird.
(Viña Esmeraelda 2017 DO Catalunya, Miguel Torres, Spain, $14.95, 11.5%, 750 mL, Set The Bar Rating 87/100).
The label calls this a Mediterranean Classic. Strange as there is not much Gewurtz in the Mediterranean!
