Musée Renoir reouverture facade

Robert K. Stephen, Cagnes-Sur-Mer, France
Cagnes-Sur-Mer and Hautes-de-Cagnes are about 30 minutes east of Nice and easily accessible by municipal transport to and from Nice. Unlike, Monaco, Monte Carlo, St. Paul de Vence and Cannes there is a certain everyday reality to Cagnes-Sur-Mer and Hautes-De-Cagnes. No casinos, no 25 Euro cocktails in swanky hotel lobbies bursting with the Russian nouveau riche. Everyday stores for everyday people.
Even the tourist attractions are relatively calm and not swamped by tourists. No need to be in line and patiently await admittance.
One small gem to keep in mind for admirers of Pierre August Renoir who died at the age of 78 in 1913 and suffered from acute rheumatic arthritis which is visible from the pictures and films showing a very twisted old man at work on his paintings. Injury and pain are part of athletics we are all aware of but painting?
Now aside from the works of art available for viewing the Renoir Museum remember the museum is overlooking the Mediterranean and beautiful French countryside itself the subject of many paintings by French artists. Rodin, Matisse, Bonnard and Modigliani who were visitors to Domaine de Collettes.
He painted many local maids at his fully equipped then modern studio and it was here that he started sculpting assisted by Richard Guino and Louis Morel.
The collection of Renoir paintings is rather limited with 16 original paintings, 30 sculptures and his studio with its furniture as well as a beautiful garden planted with olive trees.
After significant renovation work in 2013 designed to show how Renoir and his family lived at Domaine de Collettes 17 plaster sculptures presented by the Renoir and Guino families were donated to the Renoir Museum.
This is more a “Renoir as the Man” experience than a “Renoir the Artist”. Relaxing and away from the maddening crowds. 6 Euro admission plus guided tours are available from 3 Euros. Differing admission times so best to check out
