Magnotta’s New Venture Series Wines: The Whites and a Pinkie

The Rosé Venture Series 2017 was a big seller this summer I am told by the Magnotta sales representative. There are only three bottles left at the Magnotta store I made my purchase at!

Medium pink in colour. On the nose watermelon, strawberry, raspberry and a bit of green asparagus. It has some presence on the palate. Sweet red grapefruit and some juicy raspberry. Well suited for a chilled asparagus and palm heart salad marinated in garlic, olive oil and red wine vinegar.  Unfortunately, the taste just meanders into obscurity. I really have an affection for most Ontario Rosés as they are fruit forward. Magnotta misses the mark on this one. Bland and unfocused.

The Magnotta 2016 Venture Series Chardonnay from VQA Niagara Peninsula is medium gold in colour. Nice rich and round nose of apple, Bosc pear, lemon, lime, guava and a tiny hint of cinnamon. Full and round on the palate with lime, lemon, pepper and butterscotch. Nice little zing on the finish mostly of pepper I think. I like the peppery zing and that bit of cinnamon.

The label fails to say if it is oaked but I’d venture to say perhaps but very lightly. Good with, chicken grilled on the BBQ or even with turkey leftovers with mashed potatoes, carrots and Brussel sprouts swimming in gravy.

Good and will improve until 2022.

The Magnotta Venture Series 2017 Pinot Grigio has a light gold colour. On the nose apple, marzipan, fresh cut hay, pear, guava and pineapple. It smells awfully like an Encruzado from the Dão in Portugal. Again like an Encruzado a bit of raspiness and grit on the palate. Tropical on the palate with bits of pineapple and mango and getting more local some Flemish Pear, Yellow Delicious apples and a nice flow of minerality.

Beautifully made and it is not often I can say a Pinot Grigio with guts. Great with minimally prepared roast chicken or rabbit in foil with tarragon and Dijon mustard.

(Magnotta Winery 2017 Venture Series Pinot Grigio, VQA Niagara Peninsula, Magnotta Winery, Ontario, $14.75, 12.5%, 750 mL, Set The Bar Rating 93/100).

And to conclude a Magnotta 2017 Riesling from the Venture has a pale gold colour. On the nose some apple, Bosc pear, honey, guava and some pineapple. Not only does this smell more like a German Riesling than most Ontario Rieslings but it tastes like one. There seems much more residual sugar in this Ontario Riesling compared to others. So on the palate a small seam of acidity in comparison to the blast of acidity most Ontario Rieslings demonstrate. No doubt it is dry. A tad of honey, apricot, asparagus and sweet white grapefruit.

Drink by the end of 2019. I think it would go well with a turkey risotto cooked in a homemade turkey broth with white wine, onions, garlic, cremini mushrooms with dried Rosemary from your garden!
