Wiser’s Tours Taking Off
(WINDSOR, ON) – Earlier this month, the JP Wiser’s Walkerville distillery began offering Friday afternoon tours of the Riverside Drive facility. During the tour, visitors will experience the story of Canadian whisky and learn not only its history but also the process used to make it from grain to glass.
The tour concludes with a tasting of the award-winning whiskies, including such options as Wiser’s Deluxe, Triple Barrel, and Lot 40.
Already over a hundred have turned up for the Wiser’s Experience. Although most are local residents, there have been some notable exceptions.
Neil Bishop, the director of manufacturing and maintenance for Hiram Walker and Sons, told the tale of one group who seemed more knowledgeable about the science behind distilling.
A busload of tourists arrived innocently enough but, unknown to Bishop, the party was made up of science professors from a Cleveland-area university; all held doctorates.
The educators were in town to watch the Detroit Lions play the Cleveland Browns and thought the tour would be an excellent way to educate themselves on the making of whiskey. To say the least, explained Bishop, their questions were quite challenging at times.
One question he fielded was for recommendations regarding what else the area had to offer. He directed the Buckeye State visitors to Walkerville Brewery and the Kildare House. Later he received a thank you, no questions asked.
The tours are offered at 1pm and 3pm each Friday afternoon at the newly renovated JP Wiser’s Experience Centre in the Hiram Walker compound at 2072 Riverside Drive East.
