West Nile Mosquito Pool Found

(WINDSOR, ON) – The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has reported that a mosquito pool in the area has tested positive for West Nile Virus. This is the first positive detection of West Nile in Windsor and Essex County this year.

No human cases of the West Nile Virus have been identified in the area so far this year. However, locating the mosquito pool indicates that the virus is still in the region.

Residents are advised to protect themselves against mosquitoes. Eliminate any standing water which is the breeding ground for mosquitos and take protective measures to avoid bites.

Protective Measures

  • Safely use insect repellents which contain DEET, Icaridin, or other approved ingredients, on clothing as well as exposed skin.
  • Make sure door and window screens fit securely and are free of holes.
  • Limit the time outdoors when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a hat when outdoors. Light-coloured clothing is best.

The health unit and local municipalities are continuing to monitor for West Nile Virus activity. This year’s larvicide program will continue throughout the summer season.
