Remington Park Cancer Cluster Report
By Ian Shalapata
(WINDSOR, ON) – In March of 2015, the Windsor Essex Health Unit commenced an investigation into a cluster of cancer cases in the Remington Park area of Ward 10. The focus of the probe was on Remington Park residents diagnosed with primary lung cancer between 2000 and 2009.
The medical officer of health, Dr Gary Kirk, reported in September 2015 that the number of residents who were interested in participating in the investigation decreased significantly between July and August. Only about one third of the targeted residents in the area, or their next of kin, completed questionnaires. This number rose to 50% of residents by the end of December.
The analysis of the questionnaires began in January this year and was followed by a review by Public Health Ontario.
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is hosting a town hall meeting to discuss the findings, at the Optimist Community Centre located at 1075 Ypres Avenue on September 8 between 6:30pm and 9:00pm.
The evening will start with a 30-minute presentation followed by an hour designated for questions and answers.
The report on the findings regarding the cancer cluster investigation will be posted to the Health Unit website by September 6.
