Artists Expose Judicial System
By Ian Shalapata
(WINDSOR, ON) – A cross-border exhibition of artists’ examination of Canadian legal issues will be held at Artcite Gallery from June 24 through to August 6. Battlegrounds: bodies + land, justice + law will feature works from cj fleury, of Wakefield, QC, Justseeds Artist Cooperative, Norman Grondin, Renée Trépanier, and Benjamin McInnis, of Windsor, and Maggie McGuire, of Detroit.
The multimedia exhibition will explore the artists’ perspective of women’s bodies and the earth, “… two areas where the Canadian judicial system has failed to serve justice and protect, time and time again.”
It is inspired by recent high profile legal issues including Jian Ghomeshi’s sexual assault trial, the missing and murdered indigenous women, the fight to provide justice for the survivors of sexual assault in Detroit, the continuing fight to save the Ojibway ecosystem by Nancy Panchesan and Friends of Save Ojibway, and the myriad of First Nations battles with oil companies.
The opening reception will be held June 24 at 7:00pm with artists and curator Michelle Soullière in attendance. The exhibition can be viewed during regular gallery hours of 12:00noon to 5:00pm, Wednesday through Saturday.
